Girdwood Barracks and the Story of the Peace Process

Senior College Ambassadors were delighted to be part of the audience to hear and meet Dr Elizabeth DeYoung who was launching her new book Power, Politics and Territory In The ‘New Northern Ireland’ on Thursday 1st February 2024.

Dr DeYoung was taking part in a Q&A session at Liverpool University.

This provided a lively account of the redevelopment of the former Girdwood Army Barracks in North Belfast following in the wake of the Good Friday Agreement.

Dr DeYoung is a Research Scientist at the University of Pennsylvania’s Centre for Guaranteed Income Research. She holds a PhD from the Institute of Irish Studies, University of Liverpool.

Mr Hicks, who accompanied the students said “in the week where politics in Northern Ireland took a decisive turn it was an interesting and informative evening where hope was once again at the heart of the NI community. Girdwood’s story also shed light on how power, politics and territory intersect in divided cities globally”.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, we pray for world peace in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
We pray for countries to find diplomatic solutions
that will bring harmony between nations. We pray for wars to end.
We give thanks for your promise that one day there will be no more death
or mourning or crying or pain. Until that day, we pray for your continued grace
and goodness to overflow in this world so that humans can live
alongside one another respectfully, allowing for mutual flourishing.
Amen
