Intent
The National Curriculum states that ‘teachers should set high expectations for every pupil. They should plan stretching work for pupils whose attainment is significantly above the expected standard.’
At Archbishop Beck Catholic College we aim to provide a curriculum that both stretches and challenges our High Attaining Pupils during their college life and as a result we hope to fulfil their promise and maximise their potential.
Our High Attaining Pupils Policy aims to foster an inclusive approach with pupils being offered additional challenge, breadth and depth via our High Five Lesson Plan. The key principles of Consolidation, Modelling, Challenge, Independence, Response and Feedback aim to help our students to give and achieve their very best in every lesson. The High Five Lesson Plan offers challenge to all therefore we aim to create an atmosphere of inclusive challenge within all classrooms.
In addition our students will be encouraged to build their confidence, be positive, respectful, resilient and motivated always giving their best. These are the Archbishop Beck Catholic College student’s key learning characteristics highlighted by both students and staff.
Parental contact is also viewed with the utmost importance with identified students receiving communication regarding their inclusion within the group. Parents are offered additional support to ensure that all High Attaining Pupils are on the right path towards individual success.
Identified students are offered additional support to ensure that they reach the highest possible targets. Within the classroom, staff have a clear understanding of the need to differentiate with extension built into lessons and identified pupils encouraged to extend their work to complete more challenging aspects of the curriculum.
Implementation
All curriculum areas have a clear policy in which they aim to both support and enhance the academic development of High Attaining Pupils, in particular they focus on the enhanced skills which are needed for pupils to excel in curriculum areas. Each curriculum area delivers a challenging curriculum via The High Five Lesson Plan in which stretch and challenge is offered to all and is a key feature of all schemes of work and Long term plans.
The assessment procedures within the College aim to support and challenge the progress of our High Attaining Pupils. Our assessment periods help staff, students and parents to track their aspirational learning journey ensuring that any underachievement is investigated with intervention established where necessary.
Mentor support is put in place where necessary. A group of Year 12 students named “High Flyers” act as leaning buddies to younger students offering guidance, advice and support when the students require additional intervention.
At Archbishop Beck Catholic College we have very strong partnerships with all local universities that support all year groups in providing a range of enrichment opportunities to raise aspirations and to support academic excellence. The College also participates in a Scholars programme with The University of Liverpool which entails students being given reduced UCAS points offers for their courses. Other opportunities include Pathway to Law and Medicine again in collaboration with The University of Liverpool. Careers guidance is offered to support positive next step destinations.
Impact
Progress is monitored in all year groups throughout the academic year with our ultimate goal of ensuring success in final exams. Our assessment periods offer an opportunity to ensure that our High Attaining Pupils are suitably challenged and make adequate progress towards and indeed beyond their targets. Subject areas are asked to ensure that Student Voice forms part of the post assessment analysis process with students asked to analyse their own revision and assessment preparation. Parents are involved in intervention meetings when necessary to ensure improved and continued success.
Student Challenge Newsletter Lent Term 2021
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the second edition of our new Student Challenge Newsletter. Once again, as a college community we have been confronted with extraordinary circumstances as we began this Lent term working from home. Our students continue to work enormously hard and have been a credit to themselves, their families and the college community as a whole. We recognise the huge efforts that our families are making in order for our students to make continued progress in their studies. We aim to support our students when they are both in college and when there are occasions when home learning is unavoidable such as we have faced since our return from the Christmas break. In these termly newsletters we hope to inform you of possible opportunities for our students to both stretch and challenge themselves both academically and personally, in the classroom and virtually. Furthermore we hope to support our student’s ongoing academic progress with snapshots of the term ahead from each subject area.
We have an ongoing programme of exciting opportunities for our students. Our Year 7 & 8 students have now started their projects as part of the Head Teacher’s Challenge Award. We have been amazed at the quality of project titles chosen which demonstrate ingenuity, independence and critical thinking skills. Added to this is how our students have adapted to producing their projects largely from home as we have moved towards increased home schooling. Teams meetings have helped to support our students to learn new research skills as well as working towards their 1000 word project. Our Oxplore sessions led by Oxford University will also be delivered virtually and will help students develop analytical thinking. Needless to say, we are enormously proud with how our students have risen to the challenge.
Our Year 9 students have now began their academically challenging project as part of The Brilliant Club’s Scholars Programme. To date, our group of 12 students have participated in university style tutorials with their PHD tutor in which they are analysing the effect of climate change on glaciers. This is a highly academically challenging opportunity for our students with the prospect of having their project published online.
We have students in Years 10 & 13 who have started their programme of study on the Aspire Oxbridge programme which aims to encourage pupils with exceptional promise to aim high, to stretch themselves academically and to be confident in making well-founded applications to a top university like Oxford and Cambridge. Furthermore, Year 10 & 12 students have completed the first in a series of virtual courses led by Eton College as part of their EtonX programme which aims to create students who are great communicators, great collaborators, adaptable, resilient and creative. EtonX delivers courses that aim to bridge the gap between academic success and life in the real world. These courses are self-study and once again our students have demonstrated true grit and determination by completing courses ahead of schedule.
Finally, our Year 11 and 13 students face one of the biggest academic challenges this year as they prepare for external exams with the very real challenge of beginning this term with their courses continuing online. Again they have shown resilience and motivation under exceptional circumstances. What follows is guidance from each subject area on their courses for the remainder of the Lent term. Students should use this guidance to ensure that they stretch and challenge themselves to produce their very best work both in college and at home. ENGLISH
This half term we have been offering our students a blend of on remote learning lessons and live TEAMS lessons. Every week students are expected to complete all the work set for them on Google classrooms and attend a minimum of two live lessons. The lessons each day help students build knowledge and understanding which they will then demonstrate in their end of week assessment. This is handed in and marked by their teacher.

- Carry out your own research. Remember An Inspector Calls was written in 1945 but is set in 1912. What do you know about these periods of history? Help develop your historical and social understanding by creating a fact file of key events / attitudes / politics and society. You can do exactly the same for The Jacobean Period (Macbeth). This will all help towards your AO3 mark.

MATHEMATICS

- Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 should set the Qualification filter to ‘KS3’ and students in Years 10 and 11 should set it to ‘GCSE’.
- After finding the topic that they want to study (see below for each year group) they then click on the grey bar below ‘Interactive Questions’ to access the activities.
- Each topic has a set of Standard Questions and Harder Questions. Completing every question correctly turns the bar green and earns them a ‘Mastered Skill’ star. The goal is to earn as many stars as they possibly can.
If at any point your child gets stuck then each question is accompanied by a video explanation that they must watch.
Years 7, 8, 9 and 10
Students should use the search bar to find the topic that they are currently learning in lesson or anything that they have been taught in the past. If your child is not sure what topic to search for then they can ask their teacher who will direct them.
Year 11

Students in this key stage follow the Archdiocesan prescribed course People of God
In year 7 students will be studying topics found in units 3 and 4 which relate to the concept of “Who is Jesus?” and “What are the signs of Catholic identity?” There is also a focus on and reflection upon the meaning of Lent and Advent.
Students would normally have opportunity to take part in a service of reconciliation led by a local clergy member but due to COVID 19 this is not possible.
In year 8 students will be studying topics found in units 3 and 4 which relate to “Why do we celebrate?” and “what will I do with my life?” also with a reference towards Lent and Easter.
In year 9 students will be studying topics found in units 3 and 4 which relate to “is all life of value?” and “are there limits to forgiveness?”, and opportunity to consolidate the their own understanding and meaning of Lent and Easter.

Family Foreign Language Activities at home
Learning a foreign language is a skill which appears on many parents wish lists. Try teaching your older family members some basic language skills to motivate your enthusiasm. Family History Activities at home

Our computing lessons began this term online and students have participated fabulously in the TEAMS lessons and via the remote learning tasks. Every lesson includes a challenge task and questioning which encourages students to think and step out of their comfort zone. Year 10 IT: Students are working on a coursework unit to design and develop a User Interface. Throughout the planning process they have been given the opportunity to develop their skills to critically think about what is involved when creating a professional product. They have been given the assignment content and are required to evaluate and justify their decision making throughout. This type of thinking all contributes to achieving the higher grades within the course and using the different methods to plan their time and think about constraints has allowed students to develop their understanding of how to access the higher boundaries.
Year 10 Media: The use and application of digital graphics across a variety of different media sectors. The properties of digital graphics and how their purpose dictates the properties used by the producer.
Year 10 Travel: Students have started their coursework. They will need to show knowledge of the distinct types of destinations and travel routes within the UK. They will also analyse how travel destinations offer specific services to meet the needs of diverse types of customer and finally recommend a detailed itinerary for tourists travelling within the UK.
Year 11 Business: Our students have been working on completing their BTEC coursework to a high standard, researching and appraising different enterprise opportunities and then deciding on the most appropriate. They then put together a comprehensive business plan for their chosen idea detailing its aims and objectives, marketing strategies, competitor analysis, logistics and monetary management.
Year 11 IT: Students are working towards their coursework unit based on Data Modelling. Increasing their skill set has allowed them to make decisions and add further information to a given template, based on a holiday company. Using the skills to analyse the information will allow them to make recommendations to the business and assess the data that they have been given. Providing justification and an overview of why they have created the model in the way that they have will ensure that they are able to access the higher grades within the course content.

Sixth Form Subjects – Year 12 and 13
Year 12 Applied Business: Students have been working on the coursework unit, all students have the opportunity to challenge themselves by producing work to distinction standard. The students have been given modelling to allow them all to access these high grades.
Year 12 A Level Business: Students have been working on 3 main business topics since the new term which consist of Human Resource Management, Operations Management and Leadership and Management. Students all have the opportunity with the use of challenge activities and questioning to access high level skills to allow them to access evaluation and justification marks in the questioning activities.
Year 12 IT: Students are working towards their coursework unit based on Social Media. By evaluating and justifying the choices that they make throughout the planning of their project has allowed students to assess the need for the business use of Social Media. Making recommendations and suggestions will allow them to challenge their way of thinking and put forward some ideas to the business that they are working with. Students are also continuing to work on the database module of the course, developing their skills of creating reports and forms, based on given scenarios, working towards distinction level, independently.
Year 12 Media: Students are working on the unit ‘Cross-media industry awareness. This unit challenges them to understand how producers of media adapt their productions across different media industries, for example the use of the digital industries to create things like websites and social media content to further enhance and promote their products.
Year 12 Travel: Students have been working on a coursework unit ‘Principles of Marketing in Travel and Tourism’ in which they have been exploring the links between marketing and customer service within two specific Travel and Tourism organisations; Ryanair and Malmaison Hotels. Students have been able to extend their learning in order to access the higher grades of Marit and Distinction by examining and applying marketing theory and business models to these selected organisations; Examples have included the Product Life Cyle, Boston Matrix, Ansoff’s Matrix and PESTEL analysis, to mention a few. Students have been able to access a wide variety of resources to help them produce their coursework which are all located in a Google Site which has been produced for them. This has enabled students to be able to work independently on the coursework tasks, and therefore work at their own pace towards the distinction criteria.
Year 13 Applied Business: Students have been working on 2 different coursework units which include Business Planning and Marketing Communications all students have the opportunity to challenge themselves by producing work to distinction standard. The students have been given modelling to allow them all to access these high grades.
Year 13 A Level Business: Students have been working on A2 business topics since the new term which consist of Managing Change, Managing Organisational Culture, Managing Strategic Change and Political and Economic Change. Students all have the opportunity with the use of challenge activities and questioning to access high level skills to allow them to access evaluation and justification marks in the questioning activities.
Year 13 BTEC Travel and Tourism: Students have been working on a vocationally based assignment where they have been taken employed as an intern at the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA). For this they are examining the appeal of two contrasting visitor attractions, focussing on The Merseyside Maritime Museum and The Grand National Festival. They have examined a range of aspects including funding, size, scale and their contribution to the local and national economy. They have also examined how the attractions meet the diverse expectations of different customer types and the role technology plays in helping to meet and exceed customer expectations.
Year 13 BTEC Business: Students have been working on a vocationally based assignment examining recruitment and selection at Liverpool Hope University. They have taken part in a practical exercise where they have applied for a role at the University, and now having taken up that role they are in the process of selecting and recruiting for a post at the University. Their tasks have included completing documentation, advertising the post, shortlisting for the post and communicating with applicants.
Year 13 IT: Exam content and coursework are being completed. Extended questions are set for each topic allowing students the opportunity to access the higher mark bands. Feedback is provided to improve the quality of these answers. For the Web Design coursework students have been given the opportunity to plan and design a website. Justification of the designs and including all elements of the specification will allow students to achieve the top grades. Evaluating each element will also allow students to think about the decisions that they have made.
Year 13 Media: Students are working on the unit ‘Advertising Media’. This units challenges them to take a given client brief and suggest advertising materials. These then need to be justified and ideas pitched back to the client before producing the different adverting media elements.

A Level Business – using dynamic learning complete the many different case studies that are available on the online platform and also complete the end of unit quizzes to assess knowledge of the subjects.

Our Art students at Archbishop Beck have been creating some excellent artwork whilst at home that shows how creative, inventive and imaginative they can be well done! This term, students looking to stretch and challenge themselves even further creatively can research deeper into their topics this term and create their own individual pieces as developments and add

Discuss any interests in the topic you are studying with your teacher and they can support you with new artists or techniques you can explore.
Students can additionally get creative with found materials and plastics at home and create their own recycled material sculptures inspired by the artist Robert Bradford. Consider how to transform everyday items into something extraordinary.
Furthermore, now the weather is finally improving, consider how students can create artwork in their outside spaces. Use collected sticks, willow, canes or recycled objects to create an outdoor sculpture. This can be small on a window ledge or large enough to sit in! Students can plant seeds around the sculpture and photograph it as the sculpture transforms as the plants grow around it.

Year 7 : Hundertwasser and Colour Theory
Students can create their own colourful colour wheels using found objects and photograph. Additionally, students can challenge themselves in their artwork by showing understanding of more complicated colour theory such as choosing harmonious or contrasting colour palettes for their artwork.
Year 7’s can challenge themselves by exploring other areas of challenge in this term’s topic by research Hundertwasser’s imaginative architecture and design a Hundertwasser inspired house. Use materials you have at home and create a cardboard or found object sculpture inspired by Hundertwasser’s buildings.
Year 8 : Street Art
Street artists like Banksy, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat all have/had an instantly recognisable style. Can you challenge yourself to come up with your own cartoon character inspired by Keith Haring’s cartoon people (see the five a day people for healthy eating) and create patterns? Banksy’s artwork often has a political or social message. Can you design a ‘Be Kind’ or similar social message artwork inspired by Banksy? Finally, Jean-Michel Basquiat often created his murals and street art when listening to music. Try drawing while listening to different types of music and challenge yourselves to create different marks depending on the rhythm and see how it changes your drawing style.
Year 9 : Pop Art
Roy Lichtenstein’s Pop Art portrays things from popular culture. He drew inspiration from cartoons, newspapers, advertisements, and things he saw in real life. To challenge yourself, can you create your own Pop Art piece that portrays the news and current real life events now? How can you create something meaningful to you? Can you consider using Lichtenstein’s comic book style to re create our own superheroes now such as our NHS key workers?

As students work through the GCSE course, work set by their teachers is a minimum requirement. Using websites, assessment objective guides, AQA exam boards and apps should become a regular part of their weekly work.
Look at pinterest for inspiration for your chosen theme and be creative with the materials you have at home to develop found object sculptures and consider painting and drawing on unusual surfaces such as waste cardboard, envelopes and newspaper/ magazines. Try collaging magazine and unwanted paper in the house to create interesting mixed media pieces inspired by your chosen theme.

Year 12 & 13
For year 13’s we are coming towards our deadline for Component 1 in April. Students will need to continue to challenge themselves to complete large development pieces that connect to their chosen theme and work towards developing their final piece/ pieces for their Component 1 portfolio. Student Challenge Newsletter ADVENT Term 2021
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the Autumn 2021 edition of our new Student Challenge Newsletter. As a school community, we recognise the huge efforts that our families are making in order for our students to make continued progress in their studies. We aim to support our students when they are both in school and at home. In this edition of our termly newsletter we hope to inform you of possible opportunities for our students to both stretch and challenge themselves both academically and personally, in the classroom and virtually. Furthermore we hope to support our student’s ongoing academic progress with snapshots of the term ahead from each subject area.
We have some exciting opportunities planned for our students. Our Year 8 & 9 students have just enjoyed the Awards Ceremony of the Head Teacher’s Challenge Award. We are now opening the award to our current Year 7 students. Students will be encouraged to use their independence and ingenuity to create a 800-1000 word project of their own choosing. Together with Oxplore sessions led by Oxford University, we hope to show our students how to work independently, meet deadlines and inform others. Interested students should ensure that your details have been forwarded to Mrs Stirling.
Our Year 9 students have been chosen to take part in The Brilliant Club’s Scholars Programme which will see a group work with a PHD tutor over next two terms towards a research project. This is both an exciting and academically challenging opportunity for our students. Furthermore, they will have the chance to have their finished project published online.
Our year 10 & 12 students have been offered the opportunity to take part in virtual courses led by Eton College as part of their EtonX programme which aims to create students who are great communicators, great collaborators, adaptable, resilient and creative. EtonX delivers courses that aim to bridge the gap between academic success and life in the real world. Furthermore, a selected group of our Year 10 & 12 students will be invited to participate in the Aspire Liverpool programme which seeks to increase applications to Oxford and Cambridge Universities as well as other highly competitive institutions.
Finally, our Year 11 and 13 students face one of the biggest academic challenges this year as they prepare for external exams. Students follow a strict programme of homework and exam preparation. Students will be offered support, guidance and additional revision as we ensure they are able to complete their exam courses successfully. This support has already started for our Year 11 students with the introduction of our Revise Till 5 study club open Monday-Thursday after college each week. The first round of mock exams are due after half term and students should use the guidance in this newsletter to supplement their revision programme.
What follows is guidance from each subject area on their courses for the remainder of the Advent term. Students should use this guidance to ensure that they stretch and challenge themselves to produce their very best work both in college and at home.

ENGLISH
In English, the best way to achieve high marks is to be able to make links with other texts and use sophisticated vocabulary. The best way to do this is to read, read, read and every now and again watch a video or YouTube clip.
Here are a few ideas to help challenge you to become even better English student.
Year 7
Year 7 are currently studying The Hunger Games. This is a dystopian novel. Other dystopian novels include:
- 1984 by George Orwell
- Rain by Virginia Bergin
- The Maze Runner series by James Dashner
- Breathe by Sarah Crossan
- The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness (first in the Chaos Walking trilogy)
Choose a novel from the list above. As you read look for comparisons between this text and The Hunger Games. How do they meet the criteria of a dystopian novel? Look carefully at character, setting and plot. What do they share and how are they different?
Year 8
Year 8 are currently studying OF Mice and Men, a story set at the time of the Great Depression in America. Students will have looked briefly at the social and historical context of this novel and this could be further developed by creating a project about this time period.
Try and include details on:
- Major events that happened during this time period
- The Wall Street Crash, The Great Depression, The Dust Bowl
- The effects of this on the people who were living in America
- Research stories of people who travelled to California in search of work
- Unemployment and homelessness
- Include photographs and stories.
To extend this further, you could watch a film called ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ – this is an old black and white film but shows the live of people during this time. It is also a book written by Steinbeck so if you really want to challenge yourself why not read this next.
Year 9
Year 9 students are currently working on descriptive and narrative writing. Write a story where you imagine that you (or a character) have found a hidden door into a magical world.
- Describe the room or place in the ‘real’ world in detail before moving on to describe the hidden door or portal.
- Then describe your journey through the door and the world that you find on the other side.
- Use all the language features and structural features we have looked at in this unit of work to write an imaginative short story.
- Challenge yourself to write in no more than 500 words. The best stories could be entered into the BBC Two Five Hundred Word Challenge after Christmas. Use their website for inspiration.
Year 10 and Year 11
To help you with your literature exam. Consider critical approaches to the texts you have been studying. Research the following people:
- Sigmund Freud
- Nietzsche
- Aristotle
Make brief notes on each. What were their key ideas? Now think about these ideas in relation to the texts you have studied. How would each interpret the main themes of the following texts:

MATHEMATICS

- Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 should set the Qualification filter to ‘KS3’ and students in Years 10 and 11 should set it to ‘GCSE’.
- After finding the topic that they want to study (see below for each year group) they then click on the grey bar below ‘Interactive Questions’ to access the activities.
- Each topic has a set of Standard Questions and Harder Questions. Completing every question correctly turns the bar green and earns them a ‘Mastered Skill’ star. The goal is to earn as many stars as they possibly can.

Years 7, 8, 9 and 10

Year 11
Students studying for the Foundation GCSE exam should use the Grade filter to work through every topic in order starting from grade 1 so that they can master the basics. Students studying for the Higher GCSE exam have been told by their teacher which grade to start from and they should then use the Grade filter to work through every topic in order.

A Level
Students should try exam papers using other exam boards and older specifications. This will help to extend their problem-solving skills and allow them to see topics presented in different ways. The website physicsandmathstutor.com has a search function which allows them to find past papers. They can also look at Dr Frost PowerPoints on topics we have covered and attempt extension questions for which solutions are provided.
SCIENCE
Students in years all years are given keywords and recall questions to learn as part of their homework. Making sure you know the facts about a topic will provide an excellent foundation to improving your understanding.

Family History Activities at home

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Students in this key stage follow the Archdiocesan prescribed course People of God.
In year 7 students will be studying topics found in units 1 and 2 which relate to community, truth, Trinity, nature of God and the Kingdom of God. Students will hopefully have opportunity to visit the Cathedral for the annual Advent service. (subject to COVID 19 restrictions.) This will be followed by preparation for a full mock examination of Paper 1 before the commencement of unit 1 Paper 2 Judaism, Beliefs and Teachings of the religion which include worship, sacred scripture, prayer, festivals and features of the synagogue.

Student Challenge Newsletter Advent Term 2020
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the first edition of our new Student Challenge Newsletter. During these unprecedented times we, as a college community, recognise the huge efforts that our families are making in order for our students to make continued progress in their studies. We aim to support our students when they are both in college and when there are occasions when home learning is unavoidable. In these termly newsletters we hope to inform you of possible opportunities for our students to both stretch and challenge themselves both academically and personally, in the classroom and virtually. Furthermore we hope to support our student’s ongoing academic progress with snapshots of the term ahead from each subject area.
We have some exciting opportunities planned for our students. Our Year 7 & 8 students have received news of the launch of the Head Teacher’s Challenge Award. Students will be encouraged to use their independence and ingenuity to create a 1000 word project of their own choosing. Together with Oxplore sessions led by Oxford University, we hope to show our students how to work independently, meet deadlines and inform others. Interested students should ensure that your details have been forwarded to Mrs Stirling.
Our Year 9 students have been chosen to take part in The Brilliant Club’s Scholars Programme which we see a group work with a PHD tutor over next two terms towards a research project with a Geographical theme. This is both an exciting and academically challenging opportunity for our students. Furthermore, they will have the chance to have their finished project published online.
We have groups of students in Years 10 & 13 enlisted on the Inspire Oxbridge programme which aims to encourage pupils with exceptional promise to aim high, to stretch themselves academically and to be confident in making well-founded applications to a top university like Oxford. Furthermore, Our year 10 & 12 students have been offered the opportunity to take part in virtual courses led by Eton College as part of their EtonX programme which aims to create students who are great communicators, great collaborators, adaptable, resilient and creative. EtonX delivers courses that aim to bridge the gap between academic success and life in the real world.
Finally, our Year 11 and 13 students face one of the biggest academic challenges this year as they prepare for external exams. Students follow a strict programme of homework and exam preparation. Students will be offered support, guidance and additional revision as we ensure they are able to complete their exam courses successfully. The first round of mock exams have just been completed and students should use their results to guide their revision programme.
What follows is guidance from each subject area on their courses for the remainder of the Advent term. Students should use this guidance to ensure that they stretch and challenge themselves to produce their very best work both in college and at home.

ENGLISH
In English, the best way to achieve high marks is to be able to make links with other texts and use sophisticated vocabulary. The best way to do this is to read, read, read and every now and again watch a video or YouTube clip.
Here are a few ideas to help challenge you to become even better English student. This work should be completed alongside the work your teacher sets you on Google Classrooms.
Year 7
Year 7 are currently studying The Hunger Games. This is a dystopian novel. Other dystopian novels include:
- 1984 by George Orwell
- Rain by Virginia Bergin
- The Maze Runner series by James Dashner
- Breathe by Sarah Crossan
- The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness (first in the Chaos Walking trilogy)
Choose a novel from the list above. As you read look for comparisons between this text and The Hunger Games. How do they meet the criteria of a dystopian novel? Look carefully at character, setting and plot. What do they share and how are they different?
Year 8
Year 8 are currently studying OF Mice and Men, a story set at the time of the Great Depression in America. Students will have looked briefly at the social and historical context of this novel and this could be further developed by creating a project about this time period.
Try and include details on:
- Major events that happened during this time period
- The Wall Street Crash, The Great Depression, The Dust Bowl
- The effects of this on the people who were living in America
- Research stories of people who travelled to California in search of work
- Unemployment and homelessness
- Include photographs and stories.
To extend this further, you could watch a film called ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ – this is an old black and white film but shows the live of people during this time. It is also a book written by Steinbeck so if you really want to challenge yourself why not read this next.
Year 9
Year 9 students are currently working on descriptive and narrative writing.
Write a story where you imagine that you (or a character) have found a hidden door into a magical world.
- Describe the room or place in the ‘real’ world in detail before moving on to describe the hidden door or portal.
- Then describe your journey through the door and the world that you find on the other side.
- Use all the language features and structural features we have looked at in this unit of work to write an imaginative short story.
- Challenge yourself to write in no more than 500 words. The best stories could be entered into the BBC Two Five Hundred Word Challenge after Christmas. Use their website for inspiration.
Year 10 and Year 11
To help you with your literature exam. Consider critical approaches to the texts you have been studying. Research the following people:
- Sigmund Freud
- Nietzsche
- Aristotle
Make brief notes on each. What were their key ideas?
Now think about these ideas in relation to the texts you have studied. How would each interpret the main themes of the following texts:

MATHEMATICS

- Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 should set the Qualification filter to ‘KS3’ and students in Years 10 and 11 should set it to ‘GCSE’.

Students in this key stage follow the Archdiocesan prescribed course People of God.

Years 10 & 11
As students work through the GCSE course, work set by their teachers is a minimum requirement. Using websites, assessment objective guides, EDUQAS exam boards and apps should become a regular part of their weekly work. For this half term try GCSE Bitesize, or WWW.textileartist.org. Try YouTube sketchbook and textiles video’s and challenge yourself to learn one new technique per week. There are also links to see what’s happening in The Tate Liverpool and The Walker Art gallery at the moment.
Years 12 & 13
To challenge themselves students should look at the examples on the Eduqas exam board websites. This will help to extend your knowledge of the expectations of the Assessment objectives. To complete 1 skills board per week. Don’t forget to ask your teachers for film recommendations too. Netflix and BBC I Player DIOR and Alexander McQueen and Sky Arts channel documentaries. Keep up to date with changes or new up, coming designers and fashion graduates. For your personal investigation component 1 use the following Social fabric- on Redbull TV, V&A museum and the website “This is Colossal”.
BUSINESS STUDIES, ICT, COMPUTING & MEDIA
Years 7, 8 & 9
All year 7, 8 and 9 students are given a challenge question on the lesson handout each lesson.
Students can also use the PowerPoints uploaded to Google Classroom to refresh their knowledge of the different topics and sub-topics within the areas they studying.

Years 10 & 11
As students work through the vocational GCSE course, work set by their teachers is a minimum requirement. Using websites, revision guides, student workbooks and revision presentations which are all located on google classroom should become a regular part of their weekly work.
Students can also use YouTube clips on the different topics in class to gain a deeper understanding of the subject and the impact on businesses.
Years 12 & 13
To challenge themselves students should use exam papers and revision guides which have been produced to complete revision on given topics in class. A level students also have access to Dynamic Learning which gives the students the opportunity to develop independence by using the online material and examination tools to revise. Students also have designated course websites produced by the staff within the department to work independently on the coursework tasks for the vocational A Level across Business, IT, Travel and Media.
