Geography Trip – Italy
During February half term the geography department had the pleasure of taking 30 GCSE students on a whistle stop tour of the Amalfi Coast and surrounding areas. An action packed three days included a hike up Mount Vesuvius, a guided tour of Pompeii, Gelato making and a coach tour along the Amalfi Coast.
On day one we travelled straight from the airport to the town of Pozzuoli. This former trading port of the Roman empire has been affected by the tectonic activity in the area and the students relished the opportunity to learn it’s history from a local guide. Following this we hiked up Monte Nuovo, a cinder cone volcano, and took in the spectacular views of the bay of Naples.
After a well deserved rest Tuesday started with a hike to the summit of Mt Vesuvius followed by a guided tour of Pompeii. The students relished the opportunity to stand atop one of the world’s most famous volcanoes before taking in the preserved history of Pompeii.
Our final day consisted of an epic coach journey winding along the Amalfi coast. Our driver, Graciano, expertly navigated some impossible looking hair pin bends and our guide, Paulo, provided some welcome comic relief. We stopped at Positano (for photos), Amalfi (for lunch and a boat trip) and Ravello (for more photos and Gelato) before returning to Sorrento and our final night.
Despite an early start to make the journey home on Thursday, the students were in good spirits after a trip which will last long in the memory,
