Will I get lost?
Finding your way around may seem daunting at first but just remember what we shared with you on our visit to your primary school; you will have a timetable that tells you the room number, teacher and subject for each period and a map in your planner.
On your first day in September you will visit all the classrooms on your timetable and spend time in your form room with your form teacher and new class.
You will also have a teaching assistant attached to your class for the first few days to keep an eye on everyone and make sure no-one gets lost.
If you do get lost all you have to do is, ask another student or member of staff and they will be happy to show you the way. We have all been a Year 7 student ourselves before – so we know what it is like!
Will I be able to make friends?
On your first few days you will be spending all your time with your form/ teaching class and this will be an opportunity to get to know other people in your year group, so arrive with a big smile and a commitment to get involved in the day’s activities.
With your big smile and a pledge to join in with Archbishop Beck life you will be surprised how quickly your circle of friends will grow.
How will students be assessed in Year 7?
In early September, you will be taught in ability sets based on the Key Stage 2 scores sent from your primary school after the Year 6 SATs. In September, you will also have some assessments that will help us to understand your ability and progress more. There will also be two other moments during the academic year when we check that you are making expected progress in all your subjects. This takes place during “assessment Periods.”
Following each set of assessments, results will be sent home. You will be invited in to College to discuss your child’s progress at Academic Review Day in December and at Parents evening in July.
Can I have a mobile phone in College?
You can have your phone in College but it must be switched off and in your bag all day.
What shoes can I wear?
Smart, all leather shoes are presentable, cost effective and the same as all the other students will be wearing.
For boys, no trainers are allowed. For girls, shoes must be plain black with no decorations. Fashion shoes such as Vivienne Westwood’s are not allowed.
Where do I buy my uniform?
We have our own uniform shop managed directly by the College. This ensures we have consistency with our uniform, ensures good quality and because we buy in bulk it is more cost effective too.
The uniform shop is open during the summer holidays (dates advised on Summer School invitation letter) Opening dates and times will also be posted on the notices section of the website.
My child has additional needs. What extra help will they get?
Inclusion is a core value at Archbishop Beck Catholic College and we have very high expectations of all our students, whatever their additional needs. Our SEND team will meet with the SENCO of your child’s primary school and we will also contact you direct to make sure that we understand your child’s individual needs and to plan for any support that needs to be put in place to allow your child to access a full and varied curriculum.
Will my child have homework?
All students are expected to complete daily homework – this will ensure they have a better chance of success and make excellent progress. Students in Year 7 have weekly homework in all their subjects. Year 7 students may work in the College Learning Resource Center at the end of the day for one hour at homework club. Here they have access to computers and help from support staff with any homework challenges. Incomplete homework will result in a sanction by the class teacher, to ensure this is not an issue a good routine needs to be established from the first week in College. Form tutors will give students some advice and guidance about how to stay ahead with homework and finding a College/life balance.
What happens if my child is absent from College?
Excellent attendance is key to a student’s success, both academically and socially. We expect all students to meet our minimum target for attendance of 97%. If a student’s attendance falls below this, we speak with home to discuss any issues and see what we can do to offer support. We work closely with Liverpool City Council Education department to make sure that parents and carers fulfil their statutory obligation to send their child to College regularly.
Can my child bring a bike to school?
Yes. We encourage students to walk or cycle to school to stay healthy. Students may lock their bikes up in one of our bike stations outside the main College entrance (they will need a traditional bike lock). Students may not cycle on the school premises and should observe safe cycling rules on the roads as they approach and leave College.
