Discovering Your Voice – Winning all the Way

Thursday 20 November 2025

“Speak your truth; it may be the light someone else needs.” “Empowerment begins with the courage to speak out.” “Your voice can break barriers and build bridges.” “Speak with conviction, for your truth holds power.” “In a world of noise, your authentic voice can shine.”

This year has been an exciting journey for our Public Speaking students; filled with opportunities to develop their public speaking skills.

The first round of the English-Speaking Union Churchill Public Speaking Competition (ESU), took place on Thursday 20th November. Once again, the college entered two teams that gave outstanding performances, from our wonderful speakers to our Chairs and Questioners. They were motivated, well prepared, and completely professional.

Of the five schools that took part in the competition, two teams from the college won their way into the next round, which will take place in the New Year.

Our team members were:

  • Oliver
  • Thomas
  • Matthew
  • Summer
  • Ellis
  • Etem

A wonderful result to all – WELL DONE! A massive THUMBS UP!

This was the instruction given to students

There will be a chairperson and questioner that your speaker will present with. Students will begin preparing their speeches before the competition starts. We encourage all students to get involved in the preparation process, whether they’re speaking or supporting their teammates.

At the start of your heat, the chairperson and questioner from your team will join a Zoom breakout room with the speaker they’re hosting to get acquainted and prepare for the presentation.

When the heat began, the chairperson had one minute to greet the audience and introduce the speaker. The speaker had 5 minutes to deliver their speech, with the chairperson ensuring the proceedings followed exact time. Following the speech, the questioner had 4 minutes to ask questions before inviting the audience to ask any further questions, with the chairperson having the remaining 2 minutes to conclude and summarise.
