Girls in Maths

Tuesday 16 April 2024

On Tuesday 26th March, twelve of our Year 10 girls attended the Liverpool University Girls in Maths event, aimed at encouraging more girls to pursue Maths at A-Level and consider careers in STEM industries. The girls showcased their creative mathematical skills in the first ‘Statistics’ workshop, making a range of games and activities using statistical tools. They tested their psychic abilities in a workshop about probability, with one of our students, Ruby, gaining a prize for proving she is psychic! In their third workshop, the girls used their observational skills to draw distance-time and speed-time graphs and gained insights into their application in the real world. Finally, the girls were greeted by various Women in Industry, who spoke to them about their own experiences studying maths and how it helped them in their careers today. Our girls were interested to find out what the speakers did for a living, how they got to where they were and asked for any pieces of advice they could give them for the future. The girls represented the college impeccably and took full advantage of the wisdom and advice imparted to them by the Women in Industry and those lecturers running the workshops. Many of the girls said that they were encouraged by the experience and felt that they were more likely to pursue Maths at A-level, fingers crossed!
