College Public Speaking Team Win Through!

“He who wants to persuade should put his trust not in the right argument, but in the right word.” Joseph Conrad The college was delighted to have entered two teams in the prestigious English Speaking Union (ESU) round one event in November. The team of Joseph Miller, Mollianne Joyce and Finn Garity all gave outstanding performances. This team will now take part in the regional heat later in February, we wish them every success. Paul Stirling,Headteacher of the college said, “Learning to communicate effectively requires time, skill and practice. It is so important to understand what to say and how to say , so you can contribute to collaborative efforts in the workplace, school and life in general. Our students have successfully taken part in many Public Speaking contests and events. Their commitment has been outstanding”. What is the ESU? The English-Speaking Union believes every child should be able to make their voice heard. We believe that the ability to progress and to thrive in life relies on oracy – speaking and listening – skills, which are not currently a prominent part of the school curriculum. Our debate, public speaking and cultural exchange programmes help young people to engage with the world, to speak more confidently and to listen to and understand different points of view. These skills improve young people’s attainment, emotional intelligence and social skills, helping them to live their lives to the fullest.
