Latin Programme Visit to Chester

Wednesday 12 June 2024

“Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth”. Marcus Aurelius

On Wednesday 12th June, Year 8 and 9 students who are part of the Latin Excellence Programme went on a visit to Chester to help them understand what life was like in Britain during the Roman Empire.

The visit focused on the role of the Roman army and what it was like to be a soldier. The students experienced a walking tour of Chester, with Legionnaire Simmius as their Commander. They got to visit the original ruins of a Roman bank, the city walls and the Roman amphitheatre to further understand the significance of Chester’s location in the Empire.

After lunch, students were able to have a hands-on experience of being a Roman soldier by visiting the Park in the Past in Wrexham. Here the students were given accommodation in the bunk house where they experienced the “cosy” conditions as a soldier before showing their competitive streak by ending the afternoon with a spear throwing competition.

All students had a wonderful experience, and this helped enhance their understanding of Roman life.
