Nationally Recognised!

The year 8 basketball team returned from Nottingham ranked as the fourth best team in the country. It is a fantastic achievement for all the players involved to have reached the national finals having only started playing the sport when they arrived at the College in year 7.

The teams first game of the championships was against St Bonaventures from London who have a reputation and history to match as one of the top basketball schools in the country. It was a close contest, which could have gone either way going into the fourth period with only 5 points between the teams. Unfortunately, the team from London then found an extra gear, winning the last period 29-5 to leave the Beck team resigned to the 3rd and 4th playoff. Final score 85-55.

In the 3rd and 4th playoff, the College team found themselves up against another of the country’s elite basketball schools Holy Trinity, also from London. Final score 57-37 to the team from Holy Trinity.

Mr Giles stated ‘to have reached the national finals in the teams first attempt is an magnificent achievement, to have made so much progress is such a short amount time is amazing. All the players should be extremely proud to have reached the national finals and earn the right to compete against the country’s top basketball talent. The players were an absolute credit to the themselves, their parents and the College. Knowing the determination and mentality of the team, this experience will only motivate them to work even harder to replicate or even better this achievement next season’.

A massive thank you to all the family and friends of the players who travelled to Nottingham to support the team, your support was greatly appreciated.

It has been a fantastic year of basketball for the school with the year 7 team reaching the Liverpool final and the year 8 team winning the same competition and reaching the national finals. Both teams are now looking forward to their trip to Belgium were they will compete against international opposition for the first time, another great experience.

The basketball programme at the College shows no signs of letting up as the new 6th Form Elite Basketball Academy is due to start in September.
