I got rhythm!

As part of the Archbishop Beck Catholic College “Year of Celebration” students from the College recently attended concerts at the newly refurbished Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, for two very special concerts given by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

The first, was the schools concert when a group of Year 7 students were treated to an amazing concert featuring works from the classics and modern day film works. The second was the “Rhapsody in Blue” concert on Saturday 28 February 2015.

The programme was:

  • Gershwin Overture, Girl Crazy
  • Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue
  • Davis Safety Last (Harold Lloyd’s 1923 film with live orchestra)*
  • Carl Davis CBE conductor
  • Ian Buckle piano

The students experienced a full symphony orchestra accompanying a film live. Megan from the 6th Form commented, “We have never experienced the ultimate in movie sound as we did on Saturday! Wow!”

Veteran movie and music maestro Carl Davis conducted the Orchestra in a live accompaniment to Harold Lloyd’s Safety Last. With its knockabout humour and breath taking real-life stunts, this madcap 1923 comedy is an all-time classic and it never sounded and looked better. Other works performed were Gershwin’s jazz-tastic Girl Crazy overture and Rhapsody in Blue.

Bruce Hicks, Director of Music at the college said, “The famous line from one of Gershwin’s songs states ‘I got rhythm?’ They certainly did along with a fantastic cultural experience.”

Sean Sweeney from Year 11 who is taking his A Level in music a year early said, “The thrill of live music making is something everyone should have the opportunity to hear. The College has provided so many events like this for me and fellow students to attend which develop a lifelong love of the Arts and Music.”

The RLPO is the oldest professional orchestra in the country and a great European Cultural organisation Celebrating 175 years. “All I can say – again – is lucky Liverpool.” (The Sunday Times)
