World Champion Boxer!

A massive congratulations goes out to former Archbishop Beck student Liam Smith, who has just won the WBO World Super-Welterweight Title!

Liverpool boxer Liam Smith became an overnight celebrity after claiming the WBO world super-welterweight title.

But the 27-year-old still has to clean his bedroom, his mum Margaret today revealed.

Since defeating John Thompson with a knockout in the seventh round at Manchester Arena on Saturday night, Liam, nicknamed Beefy, has been inundated with messages of congratulations from big names across the sporting world.

England football captain Wayne Rooney congratulated him in person on fight night, former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard sent him a personal message and thousands of others have been in touch on social media.

Liam, who lives with his family in Aintree, said: “I’m not a proper emotional person. But the tweets I read made me nearly start crying. I was all choked up.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet. Yesterday, I did what I do after every single fight – I was out with the same gang of lads and we went to the same places. But every time I go on social media the amount of messages from people saying well done gives me tingles in my belly.

“I’m over the moon and the fans have just been amazing.”
