READING FOR PLEASURE
READING BETTER
Students had great fun decorating cakes inspired by their favourite books, showing off their creativity and imagination. Form time quizzes challenged everyone’s knowledge of authors, stories, and characters, creating a lively and competitive atmosphere. Our older students also had the chance to take part in a creative writing competition, where they showcased their storytelling talents and brought their ideas to life.
A special golden ticket hunt added even more excitement. Golden tickets were hidden inside class readers, and those lucky enough to find one received a special reading prize — encouraging everyone to dive into their books even more eagerly!
Even the staff got involved! Throughout the day, secret gifts were delivered to teachers. These surprise parcels included books, bookmarks, and other reading-themed goodies, adding an extra element of fun and appreciation for staff.
World Book Day was a fantastic celebration for the whole school community, reminding us all of the joy reading brings and inspiring everyone to keep turning the pages
Read a Good Book
October saw the Reading Hub at Archbishop Beck transformed for a themed Halloween month, creating a buzz of excitement and curiosity among pupils. Cobwebs, pumpkins and shadowy silhouettes set the scene, while displays of carefully chosen “spooky” books invited readers to explore mysterious mansions, daring adventures and spine-tingling tales. The themed space encouraged pupils to step outside their usual reading choices, with books grouped by theme to make browsing irresistible and ensuring that all age groups felt confident to join in.
The Halloween theme was also closely linked to the English curriculum at Archbishop Beck. Texts were carefully selected to support key reading skills such as inference, vocabulary development and understanding of atmosphere and character. Featured texts included Monster Class, Frankenstein, Dracula and A Christmas Carol, allowing pupils to explore a range of genres from modern fiction to classic literature. A spooky time was had by all!
