Work Experience

Students had an excellent opportunity to gather information regarding their future destinations. They gained information regarding Post 16 opportunities within the college and from other local colleges.

They also had the opportunity to look beyond this point and gather information from local universities and employers regarding school leaver programmes apprenticeships and NHS traineeships.

Other students attended a morning session at Jaguar Land Rover again gaining an insight into the apprenticeship programme, they had a tour of the factory and had a chance to speak to employees.

Can I take the opportunity to thank all our visitors in making the morning so enjoyable and interactive. These included representatives from the NHS, Hill Dickinson, Liverpool City Council, Everton Football Club, Myrescough College, Laing O’Rourke, Kier Construction, BCEIG, and the British Army.

We also had the following universities present University of Liverpool, Liverpool JMU, Liverpool Hope University and Lancaster University.

After that the students attended workshops on CV writing, interview techniques, apprenticeship website, and how to use Uni-frog.

Careers in Construction

Our careers team welcomed Lynne Debbazi from Liverpool in Work along with organisations such as Laing O’Rouke to discuss careers in construction.

This was an event targeted for Year 11 students to develop pathways into higher and degree level apprenticeships.

Careers Week – Robotics Challenge

A thoroughly enjoyable day, all the teams were tasked with building a robot capable of picking up a tennis ball, so that they could battle each other to try and collect more balls than the opposition.

Some wonderful teamwork, and engineering skills were by the demonstrated by the students in the building of the robot, and some real resilience as the technology was a little temperamental at times.

The ‘battles’ were arranged in 2 leagues with Archbishop Beck 2 winning the blue league to progress to the semi-final against Holy Lodge. A comprehensive 9-1 win saw Archbishop Beck into the final against St Mary’s Wallasey 3. Another 9-1 win saw Archbishop Beck take the prize and a trip to the Grand Final in a few weeks.

Congratulations to all the students involved they were fantastic ambassadors for the college.

Well done to the winning team Michael, Beth, Courtney, and Tom, good luck in the Grand Final.

Mock Interviews

On Thursday 20th December, we had our annual Mock Interview event for Year 12. Students received feedback on their CV and were asked a number of interview questions to help them prepare for the world of work.

As a school we believe strongly in employability and helping our students to understand the importance of skills and work experience.

We would like to thank Antony Stagg for hosting the event and introducing us to Santander, Shaping Futures, University of Liverpool and the Office for Nuclear Regulation.

The event has received excellent feedback from all parties and forms a key part of our careers curriculum.

Office for Nuclear Regulation

Students who have expressed an interest in STEM careers were treated to an informative and inspirational session.

Year 10,12 and 13 listened to presentations from leading experts, who discussed careers working with in power stations, on submarines and with sonar technology.

We would like to thank Simon, Rebecca and David from the Office for Nuclear Regulation for delivering some amazing careers and life advice.

Medical Mavericks

As part of our commitment to careers education, our Year 9 students were exposed to a number of medical based careers on Monday 3rd December.

Students learned the importance of gaining excellent grades to progress in fields such as medicine and sports science.

We would like to thank Medical Mavericks and Shaping Futures for delivering a number of practical activities, that have inspired our students to consider some amazing career paths.

Local Labour Market

We would like to thank Mott MacDonald for a fantastic careers presentation on Friday 9th November. It gave our Year 11, 12 and 13 students access to LMI (Local Labour Market Information) and apprenticeship opportunities in Engineering.

Students listened and were introduced to careers in Quantity Surveying and Transport Planning.

We would like to thank Emma McGrory from Mott MacDonald for her support in organising the event.

Aspiring Nurses Day

Our Year 11 students visited Fazakerley Hospital to attend the ‘Aspiring Nurses Day.’ Students participated in 6 practical activities and listened to presentations on careers in nursing. They learned from paramedics, senior staff nurses and the apprenticeship team who provided some fantastic information and guidance.

We would like to thank all the team at Fazakerley Hospital, for making it a memorable and inspirational careers event.

STEM Day – Liverpool University

On November 8th a group of Sixth Form science students visited the University of Liverpool to celebrate National STEM Day. The day involved a number of talks and activities to encourage students to study STEM subjects at university and show them what life at university is like.

Activities included a talk on veterinary sciences were students learned about the anatomy of dogs, cats and horses, and another on environmental sciences were students had to design their own sustainable city. These were followed by a tour of the University of Liverpool, visiting the various departments and a tour of student facilities, the students also got to experience various engineering projects that have been completed by current and past students.

This was a very enjoyable day and the students found it very informative and many now have a real interest in following courses within STEM at university.

Armed Forces Lecture

On Monday 15th October our Year 10 students were treated to a careers talk from Mrs Hannah’s daughter, Rebecca.

Rebecca is a helicopter pilot in the army and provided some very useful information regarding the recruitment process.

The talk detailed the education and training that allowed her to become a helicopter pilot, and gave a real insight into numerous roles within the armed forces.

The Year 10 students then asked Rebecca a series of questions regarding her career and other roles within the armed forces.

We really appreciate Rebecca giving up her time and would like to thank her on behalf of all the Year 10 students.

How to apply to Medicine

Today we welcomed Dr Muhammad Khan to Archbishop Beck Catholic College. Dr Khan delivered a presentation to over 60 sixth form students from schools and colleges across the Archdiocese.

The talk gave the students a real insight into a career in medicine, Dr Khan also explained his journey into the profession and gave the students an in depth analysis of the application process with some very useful tips.

The importance of work experience was emphasised and the students were made aware of volunteering opportunities that can be accessed through the Health Careers Portal.

To conclude the afternoon the students kept Dr Khan on his toes in a question and answer session that lasted for 40 minutes!

All the students were a real credit to their schools and colleges and I am sure they found it very useful.
