A Level Study Day
“Earth and sky, woods and fields, lakes and rivers, the mountain and the sea, are excellent schoolmasters, and teach some of us more than we can ever learn from books.” John Lubbock
After a long break without fieldwork our A Level Geographers finally had the opportunity to travel to Formby beach and the River Alyn during an unseasonably warm two days in March.
First off was the short journey to the National Trust site at Formby Beach to study the sand dune system. A variety of methods were used to collect data, allowing the students to practice using clinometers, quadrats, tape measures and shovels.
The following day the students donned their wellies for a visit to Loggerheads Country Park to study the River Alyn. The chance to wade in to the river to collect samples was grasped with enthusiasm as the students enjoyed another balmy March day collecting data to inform their study of rivers.
It was wonderful to have the chance to apply their knowledge in the great outdoors.
