Life Sciences Outreach Day
“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” Jimmy Dean
On Wednesday 24th February 2015, 25 Year 10 students in the “Most Able Programme” of the College were taken to the University of Liverpool. The event was arranged to give our students a taste of University life first hand, to give them the motivation to extend their horizons to undertake higher education. As part of the programme for the day they had a chance to sample Life Sciences activities, to allow them to consider Science as an option for higher education.
The event activities were designed and delivered by the Life Sciences Outreach Group and co-ordinated by the Widening Participation and Outreach team.
The hands on sessions delivered on the day included: Microscopes, DNA Extraction from a Strawberry and Physiology.
An interactive lecture was also organised, delivered by Blair Grubb, a member of University academic stuff, to show students both the equipment and facilities used in higher education, as well as how teaching differs.
The visit also allowed the young people to ask any questions they had about higher education and University, disproving myths they may have had, and providing information about their educational journey and future options.
Organiser of the event Ms Welsh said, “the students found the experience outstanding and allowed them to broader their horizons.”
