Stepping Up and Stepping Out

On Tuesday 10th January, 24 year 11 students visited John Moore’s University to conclude their participation in the Step Up programme, a three year outreach programme designed to promote fair access to education, widening access for students to go into higher education.  In this final session, students discovered more about university life and attended a number of taster sessions for different subjects including English Literature, Nursing, Professional Policing and Sports Psychology.  Each of these were delivered by student advocates enabling our pupils to see university from a student perspective.

Mrs Higgins, PHSE and citizenship co-ordinator who oversees the programme said “This is a great first-hand opportunity for our students to see what university life is like.  It gives them a university experience through the eyes of undergraduates and post-graduates”.  Lewis Brady, a student advocate who delivered a session on science and football said “All the students applied themselves brilliantly, always excited to get involved. Ellis’s presentation for his team was fantastic.”

This is an ongoing programme. The current year 10 group will continue their progress and the new year 9 cohort will commence their Step Up journey on 25th January.
