European Day of Languages

In 2001 the Council of Europe proclaimed 26th September European Day of Languages. Its aim is to encourage language learning across Europe. The general objectives of the European Day of Languages are to:

• alert the public to the importance of language learning and diversify the range of languages learned in order to increase pluri-lingualism and intercultural understanding;
• promote the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe;
• encourage lifelong language learning in and out of school.

This year we celebrated European day of Languages on Thursday 24th September to coincide with Open Evening and allow our Year 6 feeder school pupils the opportunity to take part in the day.

Pupils visited each of the stalls set up to represent a different country of Europe, where they could learn more about that country’s culture and language.

The French stall, where pupils could sample some croissants proved a popular choice, as did the sangria on the Spanish stall! The mini-Olympics on the Greece stall was also a hit, likewise was the mask making on the Italian stall to represent the carnival that occurs in Venice each year.
