College students “make light work of art”

Archbishop Beck Catholic College Year 7 art students have been working on the concept of light. The imaginative and rewarding work was inspired by Picasso and the artist Michael Bosanko.

When LIFE magazine’s Gjon Mili, a technical prodigy and lighting innovator, visited Pablo Picasso in the South of France in 1949, it was clear that the meeting of these two artists and craftsmen was bound to result in something extraordinary. Mili showed Picasso some of his photographs of ice skaters with tiny lights affixed to their skates, jumping in the dark and the Spanish genius’s ever-stirring mind began to race.

And so, the talent of our Year 7 students has been inspired, stirred and rewarded with these outstanding images.

Mrs Chaplin from the Art department remarked, “Students were taken to the college hall to create their very own light paintings, drawing with coloured light also experimenting with the effects of movement. The light paintings were captured using a long exposure technique”, adding “this highlights the artistic work of the college where our students show how creative they are.”
