Sporting Performances
Firstly, in the early hours of Sunday morning, 10th December, Stephen Smith showed incredible courage, determination and resilience when he fought Francisco Vargas in Las Vegas in the super-featherweight division. Stephen is only the second ‘scouser’ to box in Las Vegas, following John Conteh in 1976.
Stephen lost the fight on a technical issue following a clash of heads which left Stephen with a nasty ear injury after nine rounds. Stephen was willing to carry on but the ringside doctor would not allow the fight to continue. Everyone at Archbishop Beck Catholic College wishes Stephen a speedy recovery.
Later in the day JohnJoe Kenny played in his first Derby match at Anfield. Everton managed to scrape a 1-1 draw having been dominated by Liverpool for much of the game. However, JohnJoe gave a solid performance particularly in the second half where he showed great character and commitment. JohnJoe said after the game: “I loved it. We defended well. They’ve got a good attack and have been scoring goals. We had to keep our shape and a little bit of magic from Wayne Rooney and Dominic Calvert-Lewin meant we got a penalty and the draw.”
Congratulations to two outstanding former students of Archbishop Beck Catholic College.
